In a heartwarming display of sportsmanship, Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappé took to Twitter to congratulate French basketball prodigy Victor Wembanyama for being drafted into the NBA Thursday.
Wembanyama, an 18-year-old phenom from France, was selected as the No. 1 overall pick by the San Antonio Spurs in the 2023 NBA Draft.
Furthermore, the selection marked the first time a French player was selected No. 1 overall in NBA Draft history, marking a historic moment for both the young player and French basketball.
“It’s accomplishing something that I’ve been dreaming of my whole life,” Wembanyama said (h/t ESPN’s Andrew Lopez). “Hearing that sentence from Adam Silver, I’ve dreamed of it so much, I gotta cry.”
Wembanyama, standing tall at an impressive 7-foot-2 inches, has been turning heads in the basketball community for several years. His exceptional skills, versatility, and a towering presence on the court have drawn comparisons to legendary players like Kevin Durant and Dirk Nowitzki.
The Spurs recognized Wembanyama’s generational talent potential and made him the first overall selection in the draft, entrusting him with the responsibility of leading their team into a new era.
