‘These painful decisions are unfortunately imposed on us,’ Boulogne-Billancourt Mayor Pierre-Christophe Baguet said in a press release.
‘We have done everything in recent years to maintain our financial support for our professional basketball team and the ice rink (the closure of which was also announced). But today we must make choices for the future.’
Metropolitans 92 was founded in 2007.
This season, the club finished dead last in LNB Elite with just four wins, and would have been relegated to the second tier of French basketball if it continued playing.
Wembanyama, meanwhile, starred in the NBA during his rookie season as he averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds and a league-leading 3.6 blocks per game.
Metropolitans 92 also lost Bilal Coulibaly to the NBA last year. He was taken No. 7 overall.
He was awarded the league’s Rookie of the Year award after the regular season.
Notably, Wembanyama was not the only elite prospect that the Mets lost to the NBA following last season.
His ex-teammate Bilal Coulibaly shot up draft boards to go No. 7 overall to the Wizards.
