On Thursday evening, PSG players attended the club’s gala planned to raise money for the PSG foundation – the Ligue 1 champions’ official charity. According to Le Parisien, Kylian Mbappé (25) won the most expensive lot of the night as he spent a whopping €520,000 on a painting of former Brazil international footballer Pelé.
The France captain defeated his good friend Achraf Hakimi to the painting of one of the game’s greatest players with a sum totalling more than half a million euros. The artwork of the football legend was painted to be sold at the PSG gala last year but the event was cancelled due to the tragic horse riding incident involving PSG goalkeeper Sergio Rico.
Titled “O REI”, translating to “The King”, in Portuguese, the painting was created by a French contemporary artist called Alexandre Hopare. The lost was originally listed at a start price of €5,000, but with Hakimi and Mbappé determined to beat each other to the lot the piece was sold for a hundred times more than its start price. In the end, over €2.7m were raised for charity on the night.
