From the snowy Alpes to the sun-soaked beaches of the Cote d’Azur and everything in between, France has a little something for all tourists.
However, travellers who want to beat the crowds for a short getaway have been advised on just a handful of the many hidden gems the country has to offer.
According to the travel website European Best Destinations, one of the best-kept secrets in France is Eguisheim, a medieval commune in the Alsace region.
Just a 15-minute drive from Colmar, Eguisheim was first founded in about 720AD with the creation of the commune’s castle.
Today, the area keeps its traditional appearance, featuring narrow cobblestone streets and timber framed houses, often painted in vibrant colours.
Another hidden gem that tourists may not have thought to visit Monet’s Garden, part of the famous artist’s household that can be found in Giverny in Normandy.
Claude Monet, the founder of impressionist paintings, had a large country home that is now opened to the public, meaning visitors can see his unconventional blue sitting room and the studio he often worked in.
However, it is said that Monet was most inspired by spending time in his garden, which features three greenhouses and a pond full of waterlilies.
For visitors looking to find some much-needed sun on their upcoming trip to France, European Best Destinations suggested paying a visit to Menton, another small commune.
Nicknamed the Pearl of France, Menton’s setting on the Cote d’Azur makes it a great spot to spend some quiet time on the beach without being crowded by other tourists.
The commune also has a beautiful old town, featuring brightly coloured buildings with terracotta roofs, and a unique blend of French and Italian food.
Finally, for UK tourists not looking to cross the whole of the country to spend some time away, the company recommended a trip to Cancale in Brittany.
Another commune by the sea, Cancale has a population of around 5,200, making it an incredibly quiet seaside town.
Yet, its white, sandy beaches and turquoise sea make it a stunning destination for some rest and relaxation, plus the large amount of oyster beds nearby make it a great place to sample the local delicacy.
