Looking for a cheap holiday in 2024? While many of Europe’s most affordable destinations are in eastern Europe, there are still good value spots in popular destinations such as France.
According to the travel expert team at eurochange, Narbonne is one of this year’s cheapest holiday destinations.
A spokesperson said: “A UNESCO World Heritage site, this southern French town has everything you could ever wish for from a holiday to France, including vineyards, a beautiful cathedral, a canal and a gorgeous sandy beach.
“Known as France’s ‘secret Riviera’, Narbonne’s two promenades sit on both sides of the canal, making them ideal for post-dinner evening strolls.”
The closest airport to Narbonne is Beziers which is around 40 minutes drive away and can be reached on a Ryanair flight from the UK. At the time of writing, according to Skyscanner data, some of the cheapest flights with Ryanair can be bought for £32 on select dates in April.
The Abbaye de Fontfroide is the town’s top-rated attraction on Tripadvisor. The 1,000-year-old abbey is just 10 minutes outside of Narbonne.
The abbey is worth visiting for its architecture and its extensive landscaped gardens. There’s also a restaurant that serves lunch.
‘Lizzie49Colin’ said on Tripadvisor: “Remarkable monastery. Peaceful, architectural landmark of the region, beautiful gardens and stunning windows in the church.”
Don’t miss Narbonne Cathedral which is one of the town’s top attractions. Despite construction starting way back in 1272, it’s still unfinished.
‘Debi M’ wrote on Tripadvisor: “Quite beautiful chapel! One of the highest roofs we have seen other than Notre Dame’s in various cities throughout France!”
Ever booked a holiday just for the food? You’ll want to pay a visit to Les Halles de Narbonnes, the town’s expansive food market.
Accomodation isn’t too badly priced either, if you know where to look. According to reviews left on Booking.com, one of the cheapest, highly-rated stays in the area is The Originals City, Hôtel Le Puech, where you can get a stay from £65 per night.
The hotel has left customers so happy it’s scored an 8.4 satisfaction rating. Located three kilometres from Narbonne’s town centre and train station, the hotel is well-located and a great spot for those who enjoy a modern environment, having been fully renovated in 2021.
